Then we went to pick up our car and were upgraded to a Skoda (never heard of it) with gps (which didn't work) so they gave us a tom tom. My advice is, NEVER EVER drive through Europe without one--it saved us much frustration and wasted time.
On the way to Vienna, still on the "Sound of Music" trail, we stopped in Mondsee to visit St. Michael's Church where Maria married Captain Von Trapp in the movie. This is one of the twelve very ornate side altars in the church....
Then we were on to Melk to see the Abby there, recommended to us by our friend, Gerhard. It is a fabulous baroque Benedictine monastery. There are 30 monks there now although in the past there would have been 100 or more. Now it houses a school and the museum--a fascinating place.
I have never in my whole life even dreamed of a main altar--to say nothing of an entire church--as incredibly ornate as this. Only eight side altars here though.
Our new mid to late afternoon tradition here is an uplifting cup of Viannese coffee....
Yum!
Our hotel, the Fleming is very nice and quite fancy. And I'll bet you've never seen a shower like this...
It's all glass and located in the bedroom. What were they thinking?
