Labor Day in Berlin

OK--so we didn't make it to the art museums yesterday and they're closed on Mondays so off we go on the S25 again.  Its chilly but the sun is shining and we're dressed warmly.  Here's handsome Rick back at the Brandenburg Gate on a much more comfortable day...

We caught the Staatrundfahrten tour bus to see the sights and save some steps.  You can hop on/hop off at any of 19 stops all over the city which we did.  Along the way we spotted this cute little Twizy car...

Just the thing to simplify parking in the city!

On a much more sober note, we visited the "Topographie de Terrors", a museum built on the site of the former SS and Gestapo headquarters in Berlin, where so many were detained, questioned, tortured and killed.  Here, the organization for deportation of German Jews and the Jewish populations in occupied countries took place.  Homosexuals, the infirm and so-called "enemies of the state" were simply killed outright.  The heartbreaking stories of so many were told in photos and letters.

After this depressing experience, we decided we needed a lift and went to see the beautiful Berliner Dom Lutheran Church...

...a beautiful altar...

...and an amazing organ inside...

We climbed all 267 steps to the dome for a fabulous view of the decorations around the dome...

...and a look at the construction still taking place all over the city of Berlin.

The DDR Museum where we went next, brings the story of life in East Germany to life and makes it clear that though most citizens lived difficult lives, the top 1,000 (while promoting a "classless society") were treated like royalty, wanted for nothing and enjoyed a level of luxury unknown to the average GDR citizen.  This seemed so hypocritical to us....
After dinner, we headed back to say good night to the Gate...

...and return to our last night at the Wyndham.
